Where it is and who hosts it
The casino stands at 888 Nakoda Way, Mînî Thnî, Alberta T0L 1N0. That is Stoney Nakoda Nation land west of Calgary, near Morley. It sits off Highway 40 towards Kananaskis, and the venue calls itself the only casino in the Canadian Rockies. The resort is on Treaty 7 territory, home of the Stoney Nakoda, who name themselves Iyarhe Nakoda, the original peoples of the mountains.
Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino is one of six Host First Nation casinos in Alberta, on reserve land. Its host is the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, made up of the Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney bands. The designated licensed charity is the Mini Thni Foundation, and proceeds go to charitable and religious programs that benefit the community. Under Alberta's model, 40% of the revenue from government-owned slot machines at First Nations casinos goes to the First Nations Development Fund. In this guide, the venue belongs to the Calgary area section.
On the floor and around it
- More than 300 slot machines fill the casino. A slot is a self-contained electronic game that one person plays at a cabinet.
- Live table games, meaning games run by a dealer at a table, include Roulette and Blackjack. A table version of Texas Hold'em Poker is also listed, and the poker and table games line is 403-881-2832.
- Poker players can find No-Limit Texas Hold'em cash games on Friday and Saturday nights. In a cash game, chips stand for real money and players can sit down or leave between hands. A Games Manager or pit supervisor has the details.
- Complimentary self-serve coffee, tea and water are set out on the casino floor, and servers sell other drinks. The main floor and Sidelines Lounge are non-smoking, while smokers use a separate ventilated slot room at the back left, behind sliding glass doors.
- Overnight guests have 100 rooms and suites in the resort. An Event Centre and meeting rooms are also on site.
- Winner's Edge, AGLC's province-wide loyalty card, works here. A loyalty card records carded play: the card is available at guest services or the Winner's Edge kiosk, and slots earn 1 point per dollar wagered.
