A highway casino on Louis Bull land

Bear Hills Casino & Travel Resort sits just off Highway 2 (QE2) between Ponoka and Wetaskiwin, right beside a Petro-Canada. The venue publishes no street address. AGLC places it in the County of Wetaskiwin No. 10, with postal code T0C1H0 and plus code V9X4+PV (Brightview). That plus code is the handiest thing to type into a map.

It is one of six Host First Nation casinos in Alberta, on reserve land. The host nation is Louis Bull Tribe, Maskwacis, and the designated licensed charity is Bear Hills Casino Society. As of March 2024, the casino was 100 per cent owned by Louis Bull Tribe, one of the Four Nations of Maskwacis. The location was approved in fall 2019, ground was broken in October 2022, and interior finishing wrapped up in December 2023. In this guide it belongs to the Central Alberta section, among the 30 venues the site lists.

Slots, tables, lounge and rooms

  • Slot machines: the floor holds about 200 of them. AGLC lists slots and live table games here, with no VLTs (video lottery terminals).
  • Live tables: there are 10 table games, dealt by staff rather than run by a machine. The games named are Poker, Blackjack, Roulette and a Texas Hold'em variant.
  • Poker appears on the table list next to that Hold'em game. This guide does not list a separate poker room, and no racing or off-track betting appears for the venue.
  • Food and drink centre on the Muddy Bull Lounge, which hosts weekend stage acts. Its kitchen also caters the meeting rooms.
  • Private boardroom spaces come with a smart TV and AV equipment, with catering from the Muddy Bull kitchen.
  • Winner's Edge, AGLC's province-wide casino loyalty card, works here. Points build on carded play, meaning play with your card inserted or shown while you play.
